Tour de Marsh
The tour will take visitors to some of the most spectacular look outs and observation towers available in and around the Horicon Marsh. Start your tour at Marsh Haven Nature Center located on Highway 49 on the north end of the Horicon Marsh Federal Wildlife Refuge. Plenty of parking, trails, restrooms and fantastic exhibits will make your starting and ending spot the perfect place for your Tour de Marsh experience. Along the way visit the quaint small towns which give Dodge County that nostalgic home-town feel. For more information contact the Chamber of Commerce or Waupun City Hall (920) 324-7900. Maps of the route are available at Waupun Chamber office, City Hall & Marsh Haven Nature Center or download here.
Known as the "Little Everglades of the North", the Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge is home to more than 290 kinds of birds. Rated 17 out of the Top 25 Birding Hot Spots in the United States by Birdzilla.com, Waupun and the surrounding areas have a lot to offer bird watching enthusiasts and naturalists. Horicon Marsh has been designated as a "Wetland of International Importance" and "Globally Important Bird Area". There are wonderful viewing stations around the marsh including the Horicon Marsh International Education Center, on Highway 28, between Horicon and Mayville.
Do you enjoy sleeping under the starts? The Fond du Lac County Park contains a wooded 42 unit public campground, with electrical hookups, restrooms, and showers. Other facilities include playground equipment, two open-air picnic shelters, one enclosed shelter, and a baseball field.
The northeastern 40 acres of the park is State Natural Area #51. Waupun Park Maple Forest has hiking and skiing trails. It is an excellent example of a southern mesic hardwood forest, with red and white oak, maple, and white ash.
Bird watching is not the only outdoor activity in the Waupun area. The Wild Goose State Trail is 34 mile long multi-use recreational trail and is open to hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers year round. A portion of the trail is groomed for horses and during the winter (12/1 - 3/31) ATV's and snowmobiles may use the trail when open.
